art journal series: botanicals

May 23, 2018 Leave a Comment

This week in the world of botany…

Hello! So, so far I’ve managed to:

  • Define botany and plant taxonomy

  • Create a pinterest board (you can find it here)

  • Google the word botany. Lots of stuff came up, like ted talks, so I watched some on plants and flowers here https://www.ted.com/topics/botany

  • Think about poetry…

  • Go through some collected images, set up some journal pages and play with some iphone picture apps (mostly because I was procrastinating the actual work of drawing and seeing)

  • Finally start reading and sketching…

  • Use reference drawings and photographs from books and the internet to draw, take notes and define some botanical terms.

  • Draw some leaves and their “typology” (I really liked doing these)…

  • And then I paused to ask a question I used to ask my students all the time, “How’s it going?”

Answer: I started out trying different journaling styles and realized quickly that simple sketches in pen or pencil work best. Drawing forces me to slow down because I have to in order to be more accurate. It’s one of the reasons I started this study, because I tend to avoid the work. It feels like how I avoid weight lifting, squats, planks, etc. in exercise (give me dance-off any day). But, oh what results you get when you put in the effort. So effort is what I’ll put into this.

Next steps:

  • Continue drawing practice

  • Begin to draw from life and observe if/how I transfer what I’m learning so far
